I caught this article today and it really got me thinking. Which mom am I? I’d like to think I’m a happy medium though I’ve been saying for a long time that I really don’t think the world is any more dangerous today than it was 30 years ago. And I will also say that while I was teaching I definitely noticed a trend in children not having any experience being responsible for themselves, whether it be for their actions or their actual physical well being. That said, I’m glad my kids are little enough for me to put off thinking about for a bit. Heh.

My son, who is now 14, was BEGGING me to let him take public transporation to school in 5th grade. I’m proud of the fact he can use the RTD system to get anywhere in the Denver-Boulder area, knows his way around town and can by-golly order his own drink at Starbucks!

My kids still don’t take the bus — but then, it comes near us about four times a day.
They do, however, get to walk 6 blocks to the playground and come back on their own.
If we lived closer than 7 miles to school…. I’d make them ride their bikes.
OTOH, if they leave the area in the cul de sac w/o telling me where they’re going, I let ’em have it when they get home.
My dearest friend’s kids have to take a cell phone to go to the park literally across the street from her house… and call when they get to the playground. Her DH is paranoid… It’s a weird balance when our kids play together…
